People across the world are becoming increasingly concerned about climate change: 8-in people see climate change as a major threat to their country. What can you do to really reduce the carbon footprint of your breakfast, lunches, and dinner? For most foods, this is not the case. GHG emissions from transportation make up a very small amount of the emissions from food and what you eat is far more important than where your food traveled from.
For each product you can see from which stage in the supply chain its emissions originate. This extends from land use changes on the left, through to transport and packaging on the right. This is data from the largest meta-analysis of global food systems to date, published in Science by Joseph Poore and Thomas Nemecek In this study, the authors looked at data across more than 38, commercial farms in countries. In this comparison we look at the total GHG emissions per kilogram of food product.

The Neolithic Revolution , or First Agricultural Revolution , was the wide-scale transition of many human cultures during the Neolithic period from a lifestyle of hunting and gathering to one of agriculture and settlement , making an increasingly larger population possible. Archaeological data indicates that the domestication of various types of plants and animals happened in separate locations worldwide, starting in the geological epoch of the Holocene 11, years ago.
The Neolithic Revolution greatly narrowed the diversity of foods available, resulting in a downturn in the quality of human nutrition. The Neolithic Revolution involved far more than the adoption of a limited set of food-producing techniques.

Average annual temperatures are expected to increase anywhere from 1 to 5. Places in northern Europe, meanwhile, could see agricultural benefits from climate change, including longer growing seasons and a shorter frost period “allowing the cultivation of new crops and varieties,” said the report. Those climatic changes have already borne fruit — quite literally. In the northern German state of Lower Saxony, where average temperatures have risen nearly 2 degrees Celsius in the last several decades, some farmers have started cultivating fruits typically found further south, such as apricots and nectarines.
And wine cultivation, typically associated with more southern slopes in France, Spain and Italy, is now taking off in places like Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Ryedale Vineyards , in northeastern England, has been producing British wines since As one of the UK’s northernmost wineries, it relies mainly on hybrid disease-resistant grape varieties more suited to northern Europe’s cooler regions.
But the changing climate does pose other challenges, including unusual weather patterns and increased risk of disease associated with wetter summers. In an email to DW, he listed off the challenges: late frosts, destructive hailstorms and dry spells that can last for months.

In a new study from the University of Arkansas , scientists have re-analyzed fossils from a significant site in Romania that date back to the early Pleistocene two million years ago. The study revealed that there was a stunning collection of animals in Eastern Europe at this time, including giraffes with short necks, large monkeys, rhinos, and saber-toothed cats. The researchers hope the fossils will ultimately provide new insight into how and when early humans migrated to Eurasia from Africa.
Understanding these types of past environments will help scientists predict future climate changes. Of course, we think these findings alone are interesting, but they also have important implications for early humans moving into the continent at that time. The landslides were partly triggered by deforestation due to the expansion of agricultural activity in the region.
Methane is nearly 90 times more potent than CO2 in its first 20 years in the atmosphere, and is emitted from leaky pipelines and infrastructure, and is often burned off at oil and gas fields. It is also produced in farming. Rather, it will propose legislation next year requiring oil and gas companies to better monitor and report methane emissions, and repair leaks. The EU executive will then consider standards by to stop industry venting and flaring methane, practices that release the gas into the atmosphere or deliberately burn it.
Yet having the desired policy effect may prove difficult and there could be disagreements over any data used to analyse emissions. The Commission does not comment on unpublished drafts, which are subject to change until adopted. Some fuel companies, including Shell and BP, have already set voluntary targets to curb methane emissions. However, campaigners say such efforts alone are insufficient, especially because recent satellite imagery and aerial surveillance have shown actual methane emissions significantly higher than levels reported by industry in some countries, including the United States.
The European Commission is preparing a strategy to curb methane emissions from the oil and gas industry, including fracked LNG imported from the US.

A re-analysis of fossils from one of Europe’s most significant paleontological sites reveals a wide diversity of animal species, including a large terrestrial monkey, short-necked giraffe, rhinos and saber-toothed cats. These and other species roamed the open grasslands of Eastern Europe during the early Pleistocene, approximately 2 million years ago. Ultimately, the researchers hope the fossils will provide clues about how and when early humans migrated to Eurasia from Africa.
Reconstructions of past environments like this also could help researchers better understand future climate change. We found multiple animals that hadn’t been clearly identified in the area before, and many that are no longer found in Europe at all.
Poland was the only country in the European Union EU to avoid recession as a result of the global financial crisis. Nevertheless, the countries of Central Africa do manage to export their commodities to Europe quite successfully. On 1 February , the European Commission issued a notice on the impact of Brexit for food products originating from the UK.
Countries with positive net exports have a trade surplus, countries with negative net exports have a trade deficit. Much of the economic activity generated “If food-exporting countries start limiting supplies to secure their own food security, this would be of very great concern. This was the lowest figure since , as the weak euro had an impact on both the volume and price of exports. Groundnuts, a staple food for many developing countries, deserves a closer look as an export commodity.
The food and beverage industry is part of this activity and a source of additional economic impact through links to suppliers. Every exporter and producer I met had experienced rejecting their produce because it did not meet the grade.
